International opportunities do not happen by themselves. These are cooperation with international partners, maintaining stable communication, setting up many different processes and a very long waiting process. And from the side of the participants international opportunities can often seem unattainable and far from their realities. Although in order to get in, you need to try to apply at least once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From time to time, we told you stories from our international projects to inspire you to try it. Trying to apply, travel, chat, share ideas and get inspired to keep doing what you’re doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today we will talk about the training course that was supposed to take place in 2020. Aha. And it finally happened between March 20 and 25, 2023. We share the impressions of our participants to inspire you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abOur training “Freedom of Opinion and Speech” was, without exaggeration, long-awaited. It was postponed three times. Twice – due to the coronavirus pandemic. Then russia launched a full-scale war on the territory of our country. I wouldn’t call myself superstitious, but when the project is postponed several times due to a pandemic and war, the thought arises: “I wonder what life will throw at us this time?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two weeks before the final date of the training course, there were mass protests outside the parliament building in Georgia, caused by a law on foreign agents that was almost identical to russia’s. And I thought: “Well, I was saying…”. But while we were planning the shortest way to Poland from a country where there is a war, Georgians defended their right to a European future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My journey from Kremenchuk to Rustavi via Warsaw, Kutaisi and Tbilisi is almost two days by bus, plane, bus again. Already later, I decided that this whole long journey with transfers and transplants is symbolic, because in reality, on the way to freedom of speech and views, many barriers are constantly to be overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The week (from March 20 to 25) in Georgia was busy. We spent it in the town of Rustavi, which is near Tbilisi. Our host – the Georgian organization InoChange – gathered not only participants from different parts of the world (Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Cura\u00e7ao, Armenia, Romania, Georgia and Ukraine). They were people of different ages, with different professional experience, with different backgrounds. This is what made the exchange of thoughts, tools, and exercises informative, and discussions about one’s own values and stereotypes encouraged further reflection. Even after returning home, there was place for reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our trainer Ben Moreau is Belgian, who has been involved in social and youth projects for 22 years. Together with the project coordinator Salome, they made a very organic duet. They created a comfortable atmosphere where there was room not only for practices, but also for jokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, as a journalist, the practices related to my profession were the most useful, so I would like to highlight the exercise “One day in a Court”. The participants were divided into three groups (Government, Journalist, Court) and we acted out a court hearing, considering a real case at the European Court of Human Rights. The life is not so original and I got the role of a journalist. But in the end, it was unusual for me, because it was not about the nuances of the profession, but about the meanings that the Danish documentarian put into his work. And also about the consequences that such work can bring in the case when human values and rights are exchanged for personal benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was an interesting day when the participants offered their own workshops and we ourselves chose whom to go to for new practices. Our Ukrainian team (me, Larisa and Yaroslava) decided had a discussion about the current situation in Ukraine. We told about the restrictions on freedom of speech in Ukraine due to the war, explained why it is not possible to film explosions, offered a True\/False game with real fakes created by russian propaganda. Of course, there were also memes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to workshops directly related to the topic of the training, we had an intercultural evening where the participants were presented delicacies from their countries. We also had a free day, which we spent in Tbilisi. First, there was a tour of the city, where the guide was a participant of past Erasmus+ projects. And in the evening, dinner was waiting for us in a restaurant, where we were taste delicious local cuisine, listened to Georgian songs and watched national dances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was in Georgia for the first time and it wasn\u2019t love at first sight. Traveling by bus across half the country and evening walks around Rustavi revealed a completely different Georgia. Not the one you see in tourist pictures, but the real one, with flaws and problems. But it was this that made it possible to get to know it better and to understand that it is impossible not to fall in love with this country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People in Georgia are very hospitable. Unfortunately, due to the policies pursued by their government, one may get the impression that Georgians do not support us, but this is not the case. Ukrainian symbols seem to be everywhere: flags and graffiti on buildings, stickers on cars, inscriptions on walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally, when it became clear that our training would take place, I hesitated whether I should go at all. There was an opinion, how can we talk about democratic values somewhere there, when there is a war here. What can be discussed when international conventions are not followed and international organizations do not work. But a month later, after the training, I can say that it is necessary to go, because in this war, Ukraine is fighting not only for national territories. It is also a war for democratic values and human rights. For the opportunity to live in safety, to determine one’s own future, for human dignity, for justice. And of course for freedom of speech and views.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abAt the training, I had the opportunity to reflect on the restrictions on freedom of speech during the war in Ukraine. On the one hand, this is a forced necessity on the part of the state, so that the enemy cannot use important information for their own purposes. In this case, information about officials and deputies was legitimately limited, because in the occupied territories it meant an additional risk of being kidnapped, illegally arrested or even executed. However, there is a downside to limited access to information. In closed conditions, the risk of corruption abuses increases. In general, summing up the time spent in Georgia, I can say that the training itself was a place where the participants could practice freedom of speech and thoughts. And, actually, to feel the need for free self-expression and its connection with the concept of human rights. In my opinion, this is an important result of the training, when human rights cease to be something remote, imaginary and theoretical, and become part of personal needs and values\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yaroslava Larionova:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abVisiting Georgia has always been my dream, which recently came true. Nevertheless, the trip was not a tourist journey. From March 20 to 25, I took part in a training course for youth workers about hate speech and non-violent communication, freedom of speech, human rights, democracy and other related topics. The event took place in the city of Kutaisi, which is near Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This training was first planned more than three years ago, but it never took place due to the Covid restrictions. There were many postponements and several attempts, but only this one was successful. Personally, I am happy with this result, because during the training I realized that now I was able to learn and understand, perceive much more than it could have been 3 years ago. I am very happy about this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our group was very diverse in many ways \u2013 countries, age of participants, previous experience and background, occupation, views and motivations. It was interesting, comfortable and cozy to work in such a team, but at the same time it was a big challenge \u2013 you need to be a good speaker in order to be able to convey your opinion to everyone, as well as be an active listener, have empathy and a mind flexible enough to understand everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since it was a training, most of our sessions took place in the form of various thematic workshops and exercises, simulation games. Although at first we were, of course, engaged in team building activities, then we were getting used to this team and its dynamics; got to know each other, presented own selves and our organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my opinion, the topic of the training is very philosophical, so we worked a lot on abstract moral concepts, such as personal values, stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, freedom and democracy. To do that the organizers and the trainer used many different exercises and techniques. This gave good results, because we usually managed to dive into the topics and work through the questions effectively. Personally, I was also interested in just watching our trainer’s style of facilitating a large group on his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I still can’t say what exactly I learned during the training. Since many questions were philosophical, this training simply helped me to turn to myself, to communicate with my inner self, my own morals and conscience; to recall my desires and ambitions, which were relevant once, but are now lost in the routine. I also reconsidered the role of human rights in our lives and in the realities of today. The main conclusion that I made for myself sounds like this: “War is not humane.” It seems like an obvious thing, but it is perceived in a completely different way when you look at it through the lens of human rights. This phrase is now very deeply embedded in me, I constantly feel it and recall it several times every day in my thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A special pleasure was the opportunity to meet with my Georgian friends in our free time, as well as the opportunity to see some of my old acquaintances during the project. It so happened that I had not been to Ukraine for a long time, so I am very grateful to my Kremenchuk team for introducing me into our local context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditionally, at the end there should be a conclusion about whether it is worth participating in the projects or not. My opinion is definitely 100% worth it. It is movement and change, it is something new, and therefore it is growth. In addition, it is a journey and an adventure, which by default means the development and expansion of consciousness. In addition, each such opportunity is never the same as the previous one, you never know what you will get the next time. Isn’t it beautiful?\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n
